Kohl Rabi Recipes


An Asian style raw salad from Guy Watson and Jane Baxter who certainly know a thing or two about good veg. (Ref. ‘Everyday & Sunday, Recipes from Riverford Farm’

  • 1 kohl rabi, peeled and grated
  • 3 large carrots, grated
  • 1 clove garlic, crushed
  • 1 red chilli, deseeded and finely chopped
  • Fresh root ginger finely grated (a small piece)
  • 1 tsp brown sugar
  • Zest of 1 lemon
  • Juice of 2 limes
  • 2 tsps fish sauce
  • 2 tbsp chopped coriander
  • 2 tbsp peanuts roasted and chopped


Just toss this salad together in a bowl, and there it is – easy and delicious.

Turning kohl rabi into a light lunch meal, another Jane Baxter recipe (Ref. LEON, Fast & Free) ‘Hokey Poke’ a Hawaiian dish traditionally made with fresh yellowfin tuna, but they suggest salmon is a good substitute.

  • 500g salmon or tuna fillet (super fresh)
  • 2 tsp sesame oil
  • 2 tsp finely grated ginger
  • 2 tsp tamari
  • 1 red chilli, deseeded and finely chopped
  • 1 tbsp toasted sesame seeds
  • 1 med kohl rabi cut into fine strips
  • 1 bunch spring onions, cut into strips
  • Coriander leaves & 2 tsp black sesame seeds to sprinkle over the dish when serving.


Cut the fish fillet into small 1-2cm chunks. Mix together the sesame oil, ginger, tamari, chilli and toasted sesame seeds, toss the fish in the marinade.

Sprinkle the serving plate with layers of kohl rabi and spring onions. Place the marinated fish on top and scatter with coriander leaves and black sesame. Serve immediately.
